“What are the conditions of wonderment? Is it
just innocence, belief, an ability to see the simple beauty
of the world? Or is it more complicated than that? Luckily
there are bountiful examples in my life. It seems that
wonderboys and wondergirls are all around me. They are
dazzling and wondrous, lit from within, but at the same
time fragile, fearful, ill equipped for the real
world.”
—Joe
Goode
Joe Goode Performance Group presents
Wonderboy—a new collaboration with acclaimed puppet
designer Basil Twist and
original music by eclectic composer/musicians
Carla
Kihlstedt and Matthias
Bossi. This remarkable collaboration
incorporates Twist's magical puppetry into Joe Goode
Performance Group's innovative storytelling through dance,
text and song.
Wonderboy is an unexpected tale of a peculiar
hero isolated by his gift of sensitivity and an
intuitive knack that sets him apart from others. He feels
small and distant, an outsider with his nose pressed up
against the glass, but in truth he has enormous
power—to see and perceive and even to heal with his
gentle demeanor.
Goode's popular 1996 work Maverick Strain will
open the evening in a restaging of excerpts with live music
by Beth Custer. A
deconstruction of Arthur Miller's screenplay for the film
The Misfits, Maverick Strain compliments
Wonderboy with its underpinnings of cowboy
individualism and outsider identity.
